Iterative Prototyping

  • Repetition of the cycle of prototyping

  • Expensive

  • Progressive

  • slow

Parallel prototyping

  • Creating multiple prototypes to achieve the same goal

  • Expensive

  • Quick

Rapid prototyping

  • Uses CAD to create and test designs

  • Utilizes 3D renders, and 3D printing

  • Cheap

  • Relatively fast

When prototyping you want to test designs not build the final product!!!

Rapid is the best for FRC

  • Not too expensive

  • Create fast prototypes in build season

  • Easy to solve problems with the robot later in the season

  • Resource efficient

Engineering design process

  1. Find the problem

  2. Research the problem

  3. Imagine solutions

  4. Plan your solution

  5. Build a prototype

  6. Test the prototype

  7. Improve the design

  8. Repeat #7 until you have a final product
